Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he is God.” 1 John 4:15
When we confess with our mouths that Jesus is the Son of God. He abides in us. Can I draw your attention to who abides in who first?
This was such good news. I saw abiding as some type of hard work that I continually had to be strive towards or Daddy was going to jump ship. I was so fearful that somehow I was no longer abiding in him that I worked even harder. I’m learning that fear is never from Daddy, His perfect love casts out all fear. He showed me that, we received His spirit because we believed in him and we are called sons. (Gal 4:6, John 1:12)
This is such good news, it shows us that we were given his spirit as our gift, when we believed. The very spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in each of us who believe. Isn’t that amazing.
So when we believe in Jesus he abides in us, and we know that because of his Spirit in us. So if he abides in us then we are abiding in him, effortlessly. What part did we play in the abiding? It was and is simply to believe in Jesus. This is the work of God we are called to as stated in John 6:29.
This is important to understand because to many of us are trying in our own efforts to produce the fruit that comes from this abiding by our own works as I was. Our own works can look like different things, but rest assured, if it doesn’t simply look like believing in Jesus then we know it is not the work we are called to. That type of work will only result in a false fruit, a fruit that isn’t real, a fruit that isn’t sustainable, only the fruit that comes effortlessly by believing in Daddy will be authentic.
John 15:4-5 “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”
Our abiding is what allows the branch (us) to bear fruit. Notice the word bear here does not mean produce. We are not called to produce the fruit we are simply called to bear it, carry it.
Gal 5:22-23 The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
A tree doesn’t choose to have fruit, it happens to it because of the type of tree it is. Rest is a cessation from one’s own works and vain imaginations of trying to be like God. (Mark Boyce)
We can rest today in Daddy’s word that because of him abiding in us, he is the vine that will bring forth the good fruit in our lives, our only work is to believe him. Can you leave the fruit production to him today and cease striving and believe that he is God. I don’t know about you but I want authentic fruit, I’ve spent to many years exhausting myself for the fake kind that never lasts or satisfies.
Daddy I pray for each person reading this, I pray that you would open their eyes in fresh new ways. That you would tenderly speak to their heart exactly what they need to hear from you right now. I pray peace and joy to overflow in their lives from the mighty spirit that lives inside of them. Thank you for each of your sons and daughters.
