Today we are looking at the passage in 1 John 1:5-9, we are looking at the entire chunk to better understand what verse 9, confess your sins is talking about.
1 John 1: 5-This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
Light is phṓs (a neuter noun) – properly, light (especially in terms of its results, what it manifests); in the NT, the manifestation of God’s self-existent life; divine illumination to reveal and impart zoe life, through Christ.
That means that the light of God is the illumination and impartation of his zoe life in us through Christ. If we look at what light means than what would darkness mean?
John 11:9-10-Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? If anyone walks in the daytime, he will not stumble, because he sees by the light of this world. 10But if anyone walks at night, he will stumble, because he” has no light.
The light is not in him, consequently he does not see or distinguish the truth about him. If the light of God’s thinking isn’t in you, you do not see or distinguish the truth about you. You are walking in the darkness apart from God’s light.
Proverbs 4:19-The way of the wicked is like darkness; They do not know over what they stumble.
Those that are in darkness do not understand why they stumble and fall only the light of God can penetrate the darkness and remove it in our lives.
Wicked here in the greek means: condemned, guilty, ungodly, wicked man. I believe that this can talk to unbelievers and also believers who still see themselves as condemned and feel guilty and ungodly. They are not seeing themselves as the mirror reflection of the creator.
If men stumble when the true light isn’t in them and they walk in darkness, what is the true light?
2 Cor 4:6-For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory (good and favorable opinion) of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
The true light shines out of the darkness from our innermost beings, it shines in our hearts and gives us God’s divine knowledge of the glory (His good and favorable opinion of us as we see in the face of Jesus.
1 John 1:6- If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
Fellowship here is koinonia: and it means intimacy, sexual intimacy (the most intimate we can really be), partnership. It comes from koinonos: which means partaker, sharer.
If we say we know him, are intimate with him, but we are not seeing the true light he shined in our heart, his glory (his good and favorable opinion of us) then we are fooling ourselves.
The word for lie means to falsify or willfully misrepresent, mislead, to speak falsely. Literally
If we say we know him and are partakers of his life, but we are walking in the darkness of our unbelief we are literally speaking falsely and misleading our selves.
1 John 1:7- But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. (unbelief, laborsome toil, not sharing in his zoe life)
When we are walking in this good opinion, the true opinion and identities of who he created us to be it allows us to have true fellowship with one another. We know that it is Jesus who cleanses us not our own works.
1 John 1:8- If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we think that we have no areas of unbelief in our lives we are deceiving ourselves. There is always more in the kingdom. We are all growing in Daddy’s grace, there is always more to be revealed and uncovered for our freedom. These are the areas where we are not fully walking in our true identities and experiencing his zoe life in its fullness.
1 John 1:9- If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
If you haven’t looked up the word confess in the greek it means to:Say the same thing as, basically to agree with what Daddy says is true about you. So if we confess our sins, we would have to be agreeing with what Daddy says about them. Lets check out what he has to say about our sin.
1 John 2:2- He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for us only but also for the sins of the whole world.
Propitiation means our Sin offering. His shedding of blood was our sin offering for all times. He fulfilled the Old Covenant and ushered in the New Covenant.
Isaiah 44:22-I have swept away your sins like a cloud. I have scattered your offenses like the morning mist. Oh, return to me, for I have paid the price to set you free.”
Psalms 103:11-as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
Why as far as the east is from the west? Because the east and west can never again meet. If you are going east you will never find west, likewise, if you are going west you will never find east. That is where our sins are suppose to be found never, nowhere, they are gone in Daddy’s eyes forever, never to be remembered again and that means past present and future.
Hebrews 10:17 Then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
Why do we insist on bringing things back up that Daddy doesn’t even remember. He sees us as who we truly are and that is all. Righteous, perfect, beloved.
2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
We are the righteousness of God, you no longer need to feel that you have to confess your bad behaviors. To hear more about this topic please watch Confess your Sins on our YouTube channel here.
Daddy I pray that each person reading this has a new revelation of who they are in you, that you reveal to them the goodness of their true identities and convince them in their hearts that their sins are forgiven, now and forevermore.
