Nehemiah 8:10 The Joy of the Lord is my Strength
What is the Joy that it talks about in this verse?
The dictionary defines Joy as
- a feeling of great happiness
- a source or cause of great happiness: something or someone that gives joy to someone
- success in doing, finding, or getting something
I love this because I can see Jesus in it. Jesus is my feeling of great happiness. Jesus is the source or cause of that happiness, he is the someone that gives me joy. He is my success in finding the truth of who I am and who I was created to be.
Scripture tells us that Joy is a fruit of the spirit in Galatians 5:22
We know that it is not our job to produce the fruit but to simply bear the fruit. Bear means to carry, to hold.
(Sap is pushed out to branches from the vine to produce the fruit)
It is the Lords Joy manifesting in us by his spirit that is our strength. It is our understanding and belief of the truth about who he is and who he created us to be. It is receiving his unconditional love.
1 Chronicles 16:27-29a
Place here means A standing, a condition of body or mind, to arise, stand up, stand
Therefore; Strength and joy are found when we arise or stand up in who we really are, when we believe the truth about our true identity and receive his view and opinion of us as our own. Then we effortlessly ascribe to the Lord the glory due to him.
Let’s go back to our original verse now. The Joy of the Lord is our Strength. The word strength in that verse can also be translated as strong hold or maoz (Maw-oze) which means a place or means of safety and protection, a fortress, a most strong hold (fortified place, a defense) It means to flee for safety, to seek refuge in its root form uz (ooz).
A stronghold is defined in the dictionary as a place that has been fortified so as to protect it against attack.
This verse could also be translated the Joy of the Lord is our Stronghold or place of safety and protection.
The salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; he is their stronghold in the time of trouble. The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.
We can seek refuge and shelter in Daddy. The word deliver here means to carry to safety. The word refuge here is chasah (Khaw-saw) and it means to have hope, put trust in, make our refuge in, to flee for protection, to confide in have hope in.
Daddy is our fortress that we can flee to for our protection, he carry’s us to safety away from the wicked and saves us because we put our trust and hope in him.
How amazing is that. That protection, that belief in him as our ultimate protector is where our very joy and strength come from.
If he is for us who could be against us. Romans 8:31
How do we flee to Daddy for protection and for His strength?
Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
Ask here is aiteo (ahee-the-o) which means to petition, demand, beg, crave
Does this remind you of anything? How about the two words for prayer that we looked at the other day?
Phil 4:6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
The two words we learned the other day about prayer in this verse was
1)Proseuche (proseuche) exchange of wishes, offer a request
2) deesis= (deh-ay-sis)=Heart felt petition arising out of a deep personal need, request, beg, to be in want
When we come to Daddy in prayer we ask and we receive and our joy will be made complete.
Phil 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer (wish or exchange) and supplication (heart felt petition arising out of a deep personal need) with thanksgiving (eucharistia-(yoo-khar-is-tee-ah) thankfulness for Daddy’s grace) let your requests be made know to God.
What does prayer look like? A constant conversation and exchange of needs, wants, ponderings, desires and wishes.
Joy is a fruit of the spirit that flows out of understanding our identities in Daddy, it flows out of the overflow of his love for us in us which is the Holy Spirit.
The better we understand Daddy’s view and opinion of us, which is His Glory the more we walk in a newness of strength and confidence that nothing can shake us.
So experience great joy (the fruit of joy comes out of us effortlessly) as we lean towards Daddy and experience his Grace. His good and favorable opinion of us.
Rejoice in the Lord and he will give you all the strength you need.
Joy is our trust in daddy’s view and opinion of us and our trust in who daddy is and the care he will and does take of us. That is our strength.
