This is the last installment of our teaching on Life vs. Death. Yesterday we looked at how our of the heart the mouth speaks, today we are going to look more at the heart.
My son, be attentive to my words;
incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Let them not escape from your sight;
keep them within your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them,
and healing to all their[b] flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance,
for from it flow the springs of life.
24 Put away from you crooked speech,
and put devious talk far from you.
25 Let your eyes look directly forward,
and your gaze be straight before you.
26 Ponder[c] the path of your feet;
then all your ways will be sure.
27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left;
turn your foot away from evil.
Jesus came and put his very spirit in us. Lets look at verse 20-22. This is not a call for us to do it’s a revelation of what Jesus has already done.
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.
As Paul Ellis states on his website Escape to Reality: ” What is the law that God writes on our hearts and minds? Here are three things it is not:
- It is not the law of Moses. If God wrote the Ten Commandments on our hearts then Jesus died for nothing.
- It is not a new and improved version of the law. It is not the new commands of Jesus or the New Testament. We cannot please God by keeping a new law any more than we could please him by keeping an old one.
- It is not the knowledge of right and wrong that was bestowed upon us – against the Lord’s wishes – by Adam.
So what is this law that the Lord writes on our hearts and minds and embeds in our very being? It is himself. Do you see? The old law is a what; the new law is a Who. The old law ministers condemnation and death (2 Cor 3:7-9), but the new “law of the Spirit gives life” (Rom 8:2).”
Life vs. Death, new vs. old, Jesus vs. works
Keep your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.
This word life: chayyim from chayah is the same word used in Proverbs 18:21. Out of our heart flows the springs of life, out of our heart the mouth speaks. Life or Death.
How do we keep our heart or as this word means, guard our hearts? We don’t. Again this is not some call to action for us, it’s a call to believe.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart. The heart that trusts is safely guarded by him alone. This is not a call for us to guard our hearts, as that is something we could never do, it’s a call to simply trust that God already does it. God makes our paths straight, he keeps us, his very spirit in us is our assurance. He wrote Jesus on our hearts and minds. We can see in Psalms 23, that God is our shepherd, he leads and guides us, we just have to trust and follow Him.
Jesus came to be the guide to our feet. Luke 1:79- to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
He leads us into peace, into His life, into His truth. He leads us out of death, out of annoyances and out of laborious toil.
Look at more closely at Proverbs 4 verse 24:
Put away from you crooked speech,
and put devious talk far from you.
Crooked here or Deceitful is from the Hebrew word aqash: to twist, all that is straight they make crooked, prove, to know or distort
How many times do we twist the truth because we are struggling to believe it? How many times is it distorted by our own misconceived lenses. It is saying put away those lies, those twisted truths.
Devious is from the Hebrew word lazuth from luz: deviation, to turn aside, depart, no longer be with, no longer lodge with, no longer wrapped with
It is saying put the talk that causes you to turn aside and no longer be wrapped in my loving embrace far from you.
This is a beautiful call of a father to His child to simply come and rest in his loving embrace. It’s a cry of His heart for His children to see the truth and walk in it.
“I will lead the blind by a way they do not know, In paths they do not know I will guide them. I will make darkness into light before them And rugged places into plains. These are the things I will do, And I will not leave them undone.”
What a beautiful promise to us. That even in our blindness, our inability to see the truth he still guides us. He makes our darkness light and our rough places smooth. He will not leave them undone. We can either believe this and rest in it or we can not.
Isaiah 59:7-8 7Their feet run to evil,And they hasten to shed innocent blood; Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity, Devastation and destruction are in their highways. 8 8They do not know the way of peace, And there is no justice in their tracks; They have made their paths crooked, Whoever treads on them does not know peace.
Jesus is the Prince of Peace, our paths are made straight by him, or made crooked by our own self works and beliefs of iniquity.
We either run to Jesus and receive what he did for us or we run to evil (our own self works) and keep trying to earn what we already have. We either see ourselves like Jesus does or we see ourselves as unworthy and continuously try to measure up. We either walk in the beauty of peace, as the fruit of the spirit within us, or we walk in destruction and devastation. We either allow Daddy to leads us or we continue to try to lead ourselves.
To many times we have been deceived by the belief that we have to tame our tongue, we have to control what comes out of it, we have to change our hearts, we have to have more faith, believe more, do more, earn it. Jesus himself was written on our heart. Out of our heart the mouth speaks. When we believe and receive the truths of this great gift we have in us, we will find effortlessly what our mouth speaks will line up with his beautiful beliefs. It’s not a heart issue, or a tongue issue, or a control issue it’s a belief issue. Blessings.
