The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil is a deep topic that I have barely scratched the surface of I’m sure of. Right now I believe it was the choice they had, to either believe God about their identity or not. Satan said,in Gen 3:4 “God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Adam and Eve didn’t believe or recognize they were already created in the image of God, they were already like God. He had given them all of his knowledge and likeness when he created them, in his likeness. They ate of the fruit to attain something that had already been freely given because they failed to recognize and believe it.
Then their eyes were opened and they felt ashamed. They weren’t ashamed of their nakedness in Gen 2:25. Why were they ashamed after they ate the fruit? They saw that they were naked, there eyes were open to their nakedness. Their perception changed, the lenses in which they were viewing themselves changed. They were naked before but now their eyes were open to it and they felt shame.
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.
Interestingly the word for naked is from a root word that means ARAM=to be shrewd (having sharp powers of judgment) or crafty, cunning, take crafty (counsel)
Their guilt and shame lead them to cover themselves, to hide from God. God wasn’t bothered by their sin, he didn’t run away from them, he came searching for them, a concerned Daddy. I do not believe God was mad at Adam and Eve, I believe he was saddened out of love for his child. Just as I am when my child makes a bad decision that I know isn’t the best for him.
I found it interesting that they longed to be the likeness of God and tried to get that way themselves by doing something instead of just believing Daddy. They were laboring for something they already had and were. (Does this sound familiar to anyone?)
Side Note: Daddy no longer letting them eat of the Tree of Life after the fall shows his goodness and desire for them to not be left in that situation for eternity. It wasn’t punishment it was his goodness.
We need Daddy to change our perception, our eyesight, our viewpoint about who we are. To many of us our laboring, striving, due to wrong perception and unbelief. We aren’t recognizing and/or believing what we have already been given. We are killing ourselves to earn something we already possess.
You are holy, righteous, perfectly perfect, Son/Daughter of the King, no longer a slave, Friend of the Most High God, carrier of his Spirit within you, the same spirit that raised Jesus lives in you. Yes you, isn’t that amazing. There is nothing left for us to do, we must only believe that which is true. How do we believe? Through Faith which is only given to us by God alone. It is his divine persuasion that gets us to the point of a changed perception where believing is possible.
